Mother charged with child abandonment
NEWS IN SHORT
A 24-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday afternoon on charges of child abandonment after her one-year-old baby girl was discovered abandoned in the dunes near Narraville in the early morning hours of the same day.
The baby was found well wrapped in a blanket and dressed in warm clothes.
Erongo Region police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba confirmed that the mother of the child was traced later that same day and arrested.
“She's a 24-year-old woman selling kapana at a local shebeen in Kuisebmond. She's now in custody for further investigation. The baby, aged one year and four months, is safe.”
The woman allegedly took the baby girl to the dunes near Narraville and left her there.
The woman will appear in Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court this week, police said.
