Interpol on the hunt for fugitive Rebebe
Local police have no leads
After allegedly attempting to loot N$200 million from Bank Windhoek's Opuwo branch, he fled with N$500 000 in cash.
Interpol has joined a frantic manhunt for fugitive Nico Hijendepi Rebebe, who allegedly stole millions from Bank Windhoek last month.
Namibian Police spokesperson, deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, confirmed the news, adding that local police still have no leads that could lead to his apprehension.
It is rumoured that Rebebe fled to Angola.
“If we detect where he is and such member state has an extradition agreement with Namibia, then necessary arrangements can be made accordingly,” she said.
Rebebe, who was employed at Bank Windhoek’s Opuwo branch as an administrative clerk, allegedly attempted to steal N$200 million on 13 January, which he deposited into several bank accounts.
He is said to have taken N$500 000 in cash before fleeing.
Arrests
Eight people – whose bank accounts were used by Rebebe to transfer over N$2 million of the stolen funds – have since been arrested.
Of the eight, two were arrested in Opuwo while the six others were arrested in Rundu. They said they were promised jobs by Rebebe and were instructed to open bank accounts for this reason.
After his ‘employees’ opened their accounts, Rebebe allegedly confiscated their bank cards.
He then deposited N$500 000 into the accounts of Joao Limbo Joseph, Kamberuka Mukoso Lukas and Lukas Ihemba, and N$200 000 each into the accounts of Mathias Mukuve Kanyanga, Daniel Kusumwa Goncalves and Linyando Kandjimi.
Two weeks ago, Namibian Sun reported that Rundu community activist Frans Moyo called upon the State to release these eight suspects.
According to him, they are victims who were used by Rebebe.
