The 49-year-old suspect had apparently been accused of several instances of misconduct, and was due to be dismissed on Friday.

A man who survived a shooting at brick manufacturing company Henning Crusher last Friday is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his head.

The man was rushed to hospital after his colleague allegedly shot him and killed another man on company premises at Olunkono in Ondangwa.

Police said the victim (44) and the deceased (43) cannot be named yet as their next of kin - who are reported to reside abroad - have yet to be informed of the incident.

Oshana police regional commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, said the shooting took place at around 12:30 when the 49-year-old suspect - a cleaner at Henning Crusher - allegedly shot two of his managers, injuring one and killing the other.

Final warning

According to the police, the suspect had in 2020 been transferred from the company’s Tsumeb branch to Ondangwa due to alleged misconduct.

He reportedly continued to commit further misconduct in Ondangwa on many occasions, and was due to sign a final warning and subsequently to be dismissed on Friday.

“He was called to the office around that time to sign a dismissal letter, but he refused. He exited the office. After a few minutes, the suspect returned to the office with a pistol, and fired a shot to the deceased and a second shot to the victim. [One] died on the spot, while [the other] was rushed to the Ondangwa Private Hospital,” Sakaria said.

After the suspect committed the crimes, he allegedly took the deceased's bicycle and rode it to a police station where he reported the incident.

He was arrested immediately and detained. A 7.65mm calibre pistol with an empty magazine was seized.

The suspect is due to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court today. Police investigations continue.

Friday's shooting follows similar incidents where employees have turned against their superiors. An incident at the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology in 2019 led to the death of two men, while another in Windhoek's central business district that same year saw a Global Fund employee being shot and killed by a colleague.
