Alleged killer’s trial begins 10 years later
The trial of a man accused of killing his 18-year-old girlfriend ten years ago, only started at the Windhoek High Court on 26 July this year.
Deon Boois's girlfriend, Barbara Ganses, was 15 weeks pregnant with twin boys when she was murdered.
At the start of his trial, Boois pleaded not guilty before Judge Naomi Shivute.
The trial was scheduled to end on Friday, with the state calling its last witness.
The state claims that Boois stabbed the deceased four times in their house on Rehoboth Blok E in December 2012.
Ganses was also stabbed in the heart and died at the scene.
Different versions
The state argues that following the murder, Boois went to his mother and sister and allegedly asked them to kill him because he had killed his wife and children.
Boois, through his legal-aid representative, Joseph Andreas, has denied this version of events.
He claims he had gone to visit a friend at 18:00 on that fateful day.
According to him, they drank and watched movies until 23:00.
He claims when he returned home, he discovered Ganses’ lifeless body and rushed to his mother and sister to tell them.
Bail
Due to the Prosecutor General's failure to instruct the Magistrate's Court on what charges to bring against Boois, bail was granted to him after his arrest.
He remains free on bail with the same bail conditions in place.
Boois stands trial on one charge of murder, read together with the provisions of the Combating Domestic Violence Act.
