18-year-old dead after brick attack

An 18-year-old man died last week after he was hit with a brick on the head at Ombili shebeen in Odibo village, Ohangwena Region.

Ohangwena police crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Zachariah Amakali, said the incident happened in Oshikango constituency last Monday at about 20:30.

Amakali explained that a suspect hit Paulus Valombweleni Nghuuluka on the back of his head with a brick, resulting in a fatal head injury.

Nghuuluka was admitted to Oshakati State Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

“It is alleged that a group of local boys were playing dice near Ombili shebeen. The victim reportedly arrived at the scene and tried to stop others from gambling with dice by standing on the spot in the centre with his Okapi folding pocket knife in his right hand,” Amakali said.

He said the suspect and others disarmed the victim by removing the knife. Amakali said the victim allegedly started to demand his knife back and reportedly began throwing stones at the group.

“It is further alleged that one of the stones hit the brother of the suspect on the left shoulder and caused a minor injury. In return, the suspect took a piece of brick, threw it at the victim and hit him,” Amakali said.

The suspect, a 20-year-old man, was arrested and was due to make his first appearance on Friday at the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court.
