Alweendo calls on investors to support communities

In the mining, oil and gas sectors, investors in Namibia will be required to submit a manifesto or a plan outlining how they intend to improve the lives of local communities in the targeted mining areas.
This according to mines and energy minister Tom Alweendo who spoke at the annual Africa Energy Week in Cape Town this week.
"We are committed to creating a favourable investment environment in Namibia and building effective cooperation with potential investors and industry participants," Alweendo said. "We are fully aware that factors such as stable economies, transparency and efficient legal frameworks significantly influence investment decisions. We are committed to ensuring that these conditions remain in place in Namibia. We promise that you will have a reliable partner in us," he pledged.
"In return, we ask that you ensure you earn your operating permit (licence). By my definition, a licence means that, as investors in our country, you must present a manifesto to the communities in which you operate," the minister noted.
The manifesto must specify how the companies intend to improve the lives of the communities in which they operate, contribute to these communities and support their overall progress. The communities in the future mining areas must also agree to the manifesto, Alweendo added.
