The annual Swakopmunder Musikwoche brought together 140 young musicians from across Namibia to showcase their musical talents and creativity during a week-long classical music festival held from 6 to 15 December.

The event, sponsored by Bank Windhoek, provided a platform for young musicians to perform alongside experienced artists and under the direction of both local and international musical leaders.

Among the standout participants was Ayihe Shuukwanyama (10) from Ongwediva, one of the orchestra's youngest members.

Shuukwanyama, who travelled with her teacher and four fellow learners, performed her favourite instrument, the violin, and shared her excitement about playing on a grand stage.

“Sometimes, playing the violin is difficult, but other times, it can be very easy, depending on the notes I must play," she said.

"One trick to playing a musical instrument is that you continue playing even if you make a mistake and later ask for help,” she explained.

Meaningful creative outlet

The event featured various performances, including orchestral, choir, and group displays, captivating the Swakopmund audience.

Bank Windhoek’s executive officer of marketing and corporate communication services, Jacquiline Pack, emphasised the importance of supporting youth creativity.

“Bank Windhoek believes in creating meaningful and positive experiences for the youth. As they showcase their passion on a stage, they are empowered to contribute positively to their communities. We are proud of their growth and creativity, which keeps young Namibians united in showcasing excellence,” she said.

Event organiser Ailly Namupala reflected on the success of the Musikwoche during the opening of the Sound Wave Wonderland Concert, describing it as a significant step in reviving the arts and culture scene.

“Bank Windhoek’s journey with us is crucial in empowering us to bring our vision to life. Their commitment enables us to celebrate arts and culture. It inspires us to strive for the excellence we serve in our communities," she said.

Namupala also expressed gratitude to supporters of the event and encouraged more involvement in future editions.

Music enhances life

Musical director Hendi Krog praised the dedication of the young participants and emphasised the broader life lessons that music imparts.

“It was a privilege to work on music with all the children. Music prepares us for many aspects of life. It teaches us to be humble, work in a team, stand out when necessary, and stand back when we should,” Krog said, adding that music is a lifelong gift parents give to their children.

Sixteen-year-old Innocentia Kanjungu shared how rewarding it was to perform after hours of rehearsals. “We rehearsed for so many hours, but we have accomplished a masterpiece together and made new friends,” she said.

Ines Ramdohr (15) highlighted the calming effect of music. “Music gives me the courage to hold on. I encourage those who would like to play in an orchestra to try it out because you will not regret it,” she said.
