'Speel Aan' tugs at the heartstrings
A high school football team has just scored one of its greatest victories, and football coach Peter Cloete couldn’t be prouder. In mere minutes, celebrations come to a sudden standstill when Peter’s terrified eyes mark the start of a tragedy on the way home from the match.
Three years down the line, we see Peter leaving prison – pot-plant in hand, which signifies a deep and strong connection to the past. But how does he cope with the aftermath of the accident, and what does he do to stay sane?
So begins a story of healing, love, and a redemption story for a disgraced coach in the new Namibian film ‘Speel Aan’. Produced by MultiChoice Namibia (MCN) in collaboration with The Collective and Desert Film Productions, ‘Speel Aan’ forms part of MCN’s highly-anticipated Ombura project – inclusive of five other films as well as a documentary and lifestyle series.
Actor Dawie Engelbrecht stars as the plagued Peter, who has incredible chemistry with his wife Gizela (played by Hazel Hinda). Offering a hand of hope, Martin (as Edo ‘Dice’ Lutete) takes on the role as a family friend who only wants to see the best for his friends. Other supporting characters such as Che Ulenga and Lucky Pieters offer a much-needed touch to an emotional story of alcoholism and depression. As Engelbrecht describes it: “You’re going to laugh a bit, but definitely cry".
A truly Namibian film inclusive of languages such as Afrikaans and Khoekhoegowab (with English subtitles), ‘Speel Aan’ is a “deeply personal” film, according to producer Errol Geingob, and strategically designed to pull at the heartstrings of its viewers.
If you missed out on the premiere, ‘Speel Aan’ is now available on DStv CatchUp, DStv Stream or GOtv Stream, as well as other films from the Ombura project such as 'Dubbel Moelikheid'.
