#JustIn: ‘Coming Home Dead’ returns to NTN tomorrow
Returning by popular demand, the independent theatrical production ‘Coming Home Dead’ will take centre stage at the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) on Thursday, 24 May.
Produced by Creative Culture Investments (CCI), the original play first premiered at NTN in December 2023.
Written and performed by acclaimed Namibian poet Keith Vries and directed by visionary dramaturge Patrick Sam, ‘Coming Home Dead’ deconstructs the tortured history and contemporary psyche of the 1904-1908 German Genocide. The play is described by CCI as a poetic odyssey that interweaves elements of original poetry, music, ritual and archival materials to evoke the restoration of dignity for the genocide's descendants.
The production emphasises the importance of documenting the histories of indigenous peoples and countering dominant narratives that erase their experiences. Drawing from contemporary and historical texts, the play provides an accurate account communicated through poetry and narrative, facilitating healing and justice for affected communities. It also underscores the Khoe/Khoi/San people's status as the world's oldest living community and the indigenous inhabitants of Southern Africa.
