Artists' input sought

In the midst of the Namibian Arts Association's appeal to artists to provide their input for amendments to the National Arts Fund Act, it appears that artists are delighted with what these amendments may bring for the arts.

The versatile performing artist Lize Ehlers said she hopes various forms of art will be taken into account through the amendments.

"I really hope the knowledge and various emerging art forms will be taken into account when regulating services. As an artist who works around the clock, I would like to say that the value of my work will increase and be seen as an economic contributor and taken seriously by government, private sector and all stakeholders apart from my beloved loyal customers," said Ehlers.

The arts entrepreneur and member of the National Arts Association, Emmanuel Enkara, said it is currently difficult to place a value on the arts sector because it is not regulated. "We need to evaluate the data coming from the arts sector," he said.

He explained there must be an understanding of sales in the art sector for both local and foreign markets. In this way, artists will be able to make more informed decisions regarding pricing and their market.

Enkara also encouraged artists to liaise with the various bodies that govern their particular art form to ensure that they are in line with the market and the latest developments in their industry.
