All set for second edition of OLAF
Co-produced by the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) and Goethe-Institut Namibia, the Otjomuise Live Arts Festival (OLAF) returns for a second instalment from Friday, 14 October, to Saturday, 22 October, in Windhoek.
According to a press release, the lack of access to art for the majority of Windhoek’s inhabitants prompted the co-producers to unite and challenge the norm of often indoor and at times inaccessible areas of the city where artistic expressions are delivered.
“Otjomuise is the the Otjiherero name for Namibia’s capital city, which means ‘place of steam’ and refers to the natural springs found active hundreds of years ago. This name was selected as that of the festival to reflect the city’s unique environmental character and its rich heritage, as expressed by its diverse groups of inhabitants.”
The statement added that OLAF aims to bridge life and arts in the city by offering opportunities for live artistic forms to be showcased and/or exhibited within Windhoek’s public spaces.
The second edition of the festival officially opens this Friday at the Windhoek Theatre School, with a keynote address by education, arts and culture ministry executive director, Sanet Steenkamp.
The event will feature performances by the Old Lokasi Cultural Troupe (spearheaded by Rosa Namises), Sven-Eric Müller, Tapuwanashe Munyayi, Toivo Paulas, Sebby Ngateya and Ladislau Bengue, who will set the tone of the diverse, rich and powerful performances to take place during the festival week.
The closing on 22 October will be hosted at Penduka Village overlooking the Goreangab Dam. An afternoon filled with a craft market, activities for families and kids, boat cruises, food, drinks and live performances by Botselo Band, Dielo Drums and Equipped Dance will close off the week-long festival.
This year’s event is proudly sponsored by the Franco-German Cultural Fund, in partnership with the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre, the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation, the National Art Gallery of Namibia, the Delegation of the European Union in Namibia, the Namibian Arts Association, the College of the Arts, the University of Namibia, Penduka Trust and Equipped Performing Arts and Corporate Affairs Academy.
