Namibian musician Dion, from the trio PDK, is set to release his debut solo album ‘Fresh’ next month. He describes the project as a new beginning.

In an exclusive interview with tjil, Dion shared his inspiration for the album and what listeners can expect from it.

He explained that the album title represents the need to wash himself clean and start anew.

He said while he was part of the group, they were like family, “but sometimes blood clots and you can’t move any further”.

“For ‘Fresh’, the solution is to wash it all off and start again fresh.”

No limits

When asked about his creative process when putting the album together, Dion said he was given freedom of expression without limit.

He mentioned that he hit the studio any time he felt inspired, and the creative gods served him well in the silence of the workspace.

‘Fresh’ features several collaborations with artists such as Elisabeth, Mr Glo, TopCheri and Manxebe, among others. Dion said he chose his collaborations based on how a certain artist fit each song.

While the artist remains tight-lipped on the themes and messages explored on the album, he noted that he used the technique of name-dropping on his songs.

He added that his personal favourite on the album is ‘Never’, which he recorded with Mr Glo.

On fire

Dion expressed excitement about the response to his upcoming album, stating that the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. He added that seeing the ‘Time On My Own’ trailer video on people’s WhatsApp statuses speaks volumes, especially considering that right before he started working on this new project, he wanted to give up.

The artist said he now feels that he’s on fire, and everything he touches in any aspect of his life will get lit.

He ended the interview by saying that the message he hopes listeners take away from the album is that “time is the measure of all things, and sometimes you should trust the magic of new beginnings”.
