Zambezi FMD restrictions partially lifted
Movement restrictions imposed for animals and animal products in the Zambezi Region due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have been partially lifted.
The restrictions were imposed after an outbreak was detected in cattle on 13 October at the Mbalasinte village in the Kabbe South constituency.
According to the agriculture ministry, the first round of vaccination against FMD has been completed in crush pen areas within a 30-kilometre radius of the Mbalasinte and Kasika villages.
“A total of 48 258 out of 52 480 cattle have been vaccinated with the SAT Trivalent vaccine, representing a vaccination coverage of 93.3%.”
The ministry added that infection is still present in the eastern part of the region in the Kabbe South constituency, which includes kraals in the Mbalasinte and Kasika villages.
Disease management area
Meanwhile, the new disease management area (DMA) includes Kabulabula, Kasika, Makoma, Nkoza, Mafube, Nzoobwe, Old Leusese, Mutwalwizi 1, 2 and 3, Sigwe, Nyange, Mbasi, Masikili, Ihaha, Namiyundu, Nangwena, Simakuni, Nankuntwe, Musekezi, Natungu, Nsundwa, Silubaba, Ntelemba, Limai, Mundial, Jojo, Ikoto, Mudokom, Simasiku, Muzii, Ivilivinzi, Itomba, Kazuka and Luhonono.
Movement restrictions of all cloven-hoofed animals and animal products from the DMA to the rest of the region are still in place, the ministry said.
However, movement of all cloven-hoofed animals among crush pens in Kabbe South constituency in the DMA is allowed, but not to the rest of the region.
Furthermore, slaughtering of fully vaccinated cloven-hoofed animals for own consumption within the DMA is also allowed, as well as at open markets and local and export abattoirs - provided that the animals are issued with movement permits after establishing their vaccination status.
Other commodities
According to the ministry, movement of other commodities - such as hides, skins, game trophies and plant materials - in, out, within and through the rest of Zambezi, except for the DMA, is allowed, provided that appropriate procedures are followed.
The movement of products such as raw meat, raw milk and livestock feed are allowed into the entire region.
FMD clinical signs include salvation, not grazing, limping, reluctance to move, fever, blisters and ulcers on the tongue, gums and on feet and hooves.
