Windhoek Show keeps agriculture close to heart
Nearly 13 000 visitors were already welcomed on the first two days of the Windhoek Agricultural, Livestock and Motor Show after it opened on Friday after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
The popular event, which originally began as an agricultural show, is back in full swing with a wide variety of exhibitions and a mobile amusement park on offer.
The show is open until 1 October.
Great entertainment
Harald Schmidt, managing director of the Windhoek Show Association, believes that the public's excitement about the return of the show has been evident.
"This [event] has been very well supported by the number of applications for exhibitors we received. There were sufficient numbers that we could pick and choose. I am very happy that we were able to start a new chapter with this," he said.
He believes that the organisers of the Windhoek Show have done a great job of keeping their goal in mind.
"One thing that has become very important is to provide entertainment," he said.
He added that he is "very happy that we have this relationship with the theme park, which is the only mobile theme park in Southern Africa."
Challenge and opportunity
Schmidt says that the challenges experienced in the farming sector are also reflected in the show, but that the show association is still excited about the participation of a variety of farmers from all over the country.
"The livestock sector is very well represented. Several areas experienced drought, although in other parts we had very good rain. Those farmers are, of course, here now, but I believe there would have been even more if the whole country could have enjoyed a good rainy season.
"Several areas were also destroyed by wildfires and some of these farmers obviously cannot afford to incur additional costs, but we are at least around 400 again for large livestock and small livestock respectively. For the small livestock, it is only a third of what we are used to, but for the large livestock, it is at least more than half," he said.
The livestock show opened yesterday and will conclude with a parade on Sunday.
