Hardap water enough to supply Mariental through 2025
The Hardap Dam has enough water to supply Mariental through 2025, Mariental CEO Paul Nghiwilepo said late last week.
Nghiwilepo also confirmed that full water supply was restored to Mariental following interruptions experienced last week.
While speaking on the resumption of water supply, he added: “The municipality also wants to dispel rumours that the Hardap Dam cannot provide Mariental with water. The water that is currently available in the Hardap Dam is enough to supply Mariental throughout the year 2025.”
NamWater closed the irrigation water supply from the dam on 31 October this year.
Temporary interruption
Nghiwilepo said Thursday last week that the water interruptions experienced were a result of challenges NamWater encountered with the extraction of water at the Hardap Dam. The level of the dam stood at 5.7% on Monday.
During the supply interruptions, the Mariental municipality distributed water to the Aimablaagte and Empelheim communities, as well as making water available at the town’s fire station.
On Thursday, Nghiwilepo confirmed that water supply had been restored to most areas, adding that by the time water was restored, the Mariental reservoir was at 64% capacity.
“As the Mariental reservoir fills up during the day, water supply will be restored to the areas without water.”
