The new year has been greeted with rain showers in various parts of the country, and the Namibia Meteorological Service predicts more rain.

According to chief weather forecaster Odillo Kgobetsi, rain is expected for the central parts of the country, as well as the eastern regions, the Kunene Region, and the central north.

"Slight dry conditions are predicted for the Zambezi Region, but rain is developing in that area from tonight, and we also expect rain throughout the week."

Every drop counts

Approximately 18.5 mm was reportedly recorded over the weekend in the vicinity of the Drie Krone estate, east of Windhoek.

Adell Malan said a quick hailstorm occurred, causing water to flow into the dam in the area. Drie Krone also measured 10 mm on Saturday.

"Snuffles [our dog] immediately sat in the water," Malan recounted. Windhoek residents shared rainfall figures in their area on Facebook, with Andrew Kisting in Khomasdal recording 10 mm yesterday and Trevor Pearce from Hochlandpark recording 9 mm on Saturday. Residents of Pionierspark experienced between 3 mm and 4 mm of rain.

Borrie Borman from Tsumeb said 6 mm fell on Sunday in the vicinity of the town's airport, and Bertie Liebenberg measured 9 mm in Otjiwarongo on Sunday. Brian Eagleton reported 6 mm outside Outjo.

Forecast

Kgobetsi further stated that the coast can also expect more cloudy conditions with light rain in parts of the northern and central coastal areas in the coming week. Dry air and mist are also predicted for the coast starting Wednesday. "Temperatures in the north can rise to the low 30s in the coming days, and warmer weather can be expected later in the week in the central parts," Kgobetsi said.
