E-voucher system rolled out in Mariental
The Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF) recently rolled out its e-voucher card system at Mariental.
The e-voucher system allows selected beneficiaries to access goods and services from selected retailers.
The system falls under a project aimed at strengthening Namibian food systems to recover from emergencies.
The agriculture ministry, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the EIF, has launched the Urban Agriculture concept with financial support from the Japanese government.
The programme aims to improve the production of fruit and vegetables to address nutritional deficiencies affecting urban and peri-urban households.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the municipalities of Windhoek, Swakopmund and Rundu, and constituency offices in the Hardap Region.
Each local authority will receive N$500 000 under the programme.
EIF chief operations officer Karl Mutani Aribeb said the e-voucher system is a means to make services more accessible to urban farmers.
“You have given us and our people hope with this programme to realise their dreams of becoming urban small-scale farmers through the e-voucher system and to you the beneficiaries, we as the regional council want to see results and want to see you creating employment opportunities and improving livelihoods with these grants that you are receiving here today,” said Deensia Swartbooi, regional councillor for the Mariental Constituency.
