Malaysia rallies behind Palestine

Israel-Palestine conflict places global economy at risk
Malaysia says there is a possibility that the present conflict could destabilise the entire globe if not addressed.
STAFF REPORTER
Malaysia was one of the countries that threw their weight behind Palestine at the recently concluded 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that was held in neighbouring Angola, where the Asian state submitted a resolution stressing the plight of the Palestinian people and the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict.

IPU convened its assembly session to deliberate on the decision on an emergency item at the Plenary Hall of the National Assembly of Angola.

Malaysia warned that there is a possibility of the present conflict escalating and further destabilising the region and, by extension, the entire globe.

In light of the escalating violence and worsening humanitarian situation, Malaysia urged the international community to establish a committee to monitor the humanitarian situation and the actions of all parties involved.

Resolutions

Decisions were needed in four main draft resolutions proposed by members of the IPU, namely: Pakistan on its Islamophobia issue; Algeria; Kuwait( on behalf of the Arab Group) with Iran, Indonesia, and South Africa on the stopping of the war and violations of human rights in Gaza; Malaysia on the multifaceted approach to the 'Question of Palestine'; and lastly, the Canada draft resolution on common ground on peace.

The proposal titled ‘Multifaceted Approach to the Question of Palestine: Parliamentary Diplomacy and Sustainable Development Goal 16’ called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the ongoing conflict that has caused the deaths of thousands of civilians in both countries.

Malaysia’s high commissioner to Namibia, Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, who also formed part of the Malaysian delegation, said the resolution signifies Malaysia’s long-held stance that the war and violence in Gaza must come to an end.

Stop

Providing an update to this publication upon his return to Namibia, Yahaya said: “Malaysia and Pakistan that spoke on the issues had decided to withdraw their resolutions in order to give support to a similar resolution proposed by the Arab Group and like-minded nations. Datuk Seri Zurainah Musa, who led the Malaysian Parliamentarian Delegation to the 147th IPU meeting, spoke on the essence of Malaysia’s draft resolution.”

Malaysia stressed the need to stop the aggression and crimes against humanity committed by the Palestinians.

“During the voting done on the two resolutions that gained the needful momentum, it saw both the proposed resolutions by the Arab Group and like-minded nations on the matter of stopping the war and human rights violations in Gaza as well as the proposed resolution by Canada that contained the element of supporting the right of Israel to self-defence not receiving the required majority; hence both were not adopted as an emergency item.”

Yahaya concluded: “The overall picture depicted from the voting is that countries were divided between the west and the eastern nations.”
