Two brothers, aged four and seven, died on Saturday after reportedly slipping into the river and drowning at Mayara village in the Kavango East Region. Police crime investigations coordinator Bonifatius Kanyetu confirmed the incident, which took place at 14:00 in the Mukwe constituency.

Kanyetu said the two minors had gone to the river with their sister, who was washing clothes.

"They were playing on the bank of the river when they slipped into the water and drowned. The search for the bodies commenced shortly after the report was made to the police. The body of the seven-year-old was retrieved and identified as Valentinus Haushiku Mangundu. His next of kin have been informed, and his body was taken to the mortuary pending a postmortem. The body of the younger brother is still missing," he said.

The search for the boy's body continues.
