Otavi accident: Driver out on bail

The 59-year-old medical doctor from Brazil, the sole survivor of a car accident about two weeks ago near Otavi in ​​which nine people los their lives, was released on bail on Friday.

Luis Charles Araujo de Sá was granted bail of N$150 000 in the Otavi Magistrate's Court on Friday. He faces charges of culpable homicide and reckless, negligent or careless driving.

The accident, which happened about 20 km outside Otavi, is said to have occurred when Araujo De Sá's Toyota Fortuner apparently tried to overtake another vehicle and crashed into a seven-seater vehicle. Eight occupants of the seven-seater vehicle died and Araujo de Sá's wife, Natale Gontijo, was also one of the victims.

He was arrested after the accident and remained in custody until he was released on bail on Friday.

Araujo De Sá and Gontijo were tourists in the country at the time of the accident and were travelling through Africa. Gontijo, also a Brazilian, worked as a plastic surgeon in Verona, Italy.
