Help pours in for Aussenkehr fire victims
News in short
Humanitarian assistance continues to pour in for Aussenkehr communities along the Orange River after dozens of thatched houses were destroyed by a fire earlier this month, leaving many residents homeless and destitute.
Aussenkehr is the country’s grape production hub.
Official figures from the Namibian Police indicate that 72 homes were destroyed and affected community members lost all their belongings such as documents, food, clothes, blankets and mattresses. No deaths or serious injuries have been reported.
The affected communities received seven tents, 75 mattresses and blankets, 75 bottles of cooking oil and 20-kilogram bags of maize flour each, 360 cans of fish and 180 bags of soy mince from the government through the Office of the Prime Minister.
"Our hearts go out to the affected families. We appreciate the support of Good Samaritans who continue to meet the government halfway to provide relief to the affected victims,” executive director I-Ben Nashandi said.
