Let’s vote peacefully – Pohamba
Former president Hifikepunye Pohamba has appealed for peace during the presidential and National Assembly elections on 27 November.
The former president made these remarks during the presentation of his book, ‘Footprints of Hifikepunye Pohamba – Ondjila Eyi A Enda’ in Ongwediva on Friday.
The autobiography recounts Pohamba’s life, political career, the struggle of Namibia’s independence, and the contributions he made to the country, both before and during his term as president.
Pohamba said he recognises that the playing field has grown, with old and new political party leaders competing for the presidency and hoping to garner seats in the National Assembly.
He emphasised that democracy should inspire all political leaders and their supporters to avoid violence as the country heads to the polls.
“As Namibians, let us maintain our peace and stability. Let us avoid what happened in Mozambique and focus on peaceful elections,” Pohamba said in reference to Mozambique’s general elections in October, which have morphed into nationwide protests against Frelimo, which has governed the country since independence.
Pohamba said as Namibians enjoy the benefits of those “whose blood waters our freedom”, and the independence of the country which has allowed politicians to campaign and engage in politics, leaders should not “jump at each other’s throats”.
“We did not do that when I was campaigning to be the president of this country. All was peaceful, and we want to see the same peace prevailing during these presidential and National Assembly elections.”
Pohamba urged members of political parties not to go into the election armed with pangas, guns or fists to fight those they don’t support.
“We all remain Namibians. United by the same vision of our country,” he said.

Oshana governor Elia Irimari pledged nine copies of Pohamba’s autobiography, of which five will be for his office and four will be distributed to select schools in the region.
Irimari said this initiative is aimed at promoting literacy and education within the communities. #NamibiaDecides2024
