I’m not supporting Netumbo for gain – Sankwasa
Former deputy minister of works and transport Sankwasa James Sankwasa, who has been actively campaigning for Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to retain the Swapo vice-presidency, says he is not seeking favours in return.
He said he is campaigning for the international relations minister because he believes she carries the image and reputation of the party.
Speaking to Namibian Sun yesterday, he said Swapo members who are able to persuade the about 700 delegates at the party’s elective congress - slated for later this month - will determine the outcome of the 2024 presidential and National Assembly elections.
Sankwasa, who is not prepared to accept the possibility of Swapo becoming an opposition party after the 2024 elections, said it is the duty of all Swapo members to ensure that the right candidates are elected into the various leadership positions at the upcoming elective congress.
He therefore called on party members to campaign for candidates based on their capabilities, and not in search of rewards after their candidates have won.
Duty-bound
“We should not be involved in politics because ‘I want a position’. We should be involved as citizens because whatever policies are made are going to affect you, whether you are in parliament or in the village,” Sankwasa said.
“So, you have a duty to contribute towards the policies put in place and that’s why some of us are busy like that. It’s not a question that I want to be [in] whatever [position]. I want everyone to get this, that if you sit and campaign because of a post, you will be the very first person to be frustrated when you don’t get that post.
“I believe I am campaigning for Swapo to win in 2024. Swapo will be represented by a person, so I am not particularly campaigning for a particular person as an individual, I am campaigning for this person because this person carries the image and reputation of Swapo.”
Nandi-Ndaitwah will square off against Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta at the congress, which kicks off on 25 November in Windhoek.
The winner will challenge - as a candidate for the ruling party - for the Namibian presidency in the 2024 election.
