Gebhardt beefs up Baroka squad
South African PSL outfit Baroka FC has snapped up Namibian striker Ananias Gebhardt ahead of the new season.
LIMBA MUPETAMI - Namibian international left-back Ananias Gebhardt, who was previously with Jomo Cosmos in the South African first division, has been signed by Baroka FC, the club announced on Friday.
Gebhardt signed with Cosmos in 2016, together with Denzil Haoseb, and has played an instrumental part in the team under Jomo Sono's leadership.
However, the Namibian has now signed a two-year contract with his new club, which also signed nine other players ahead of the upcoming Absa premiership season, as well as a new Zimbabwean coach Wedson Nyirenda.
Another Namibian, who was also signed to the club, Virgil Vries, has now parted ways with Baroka, together with Lewis Macha, Khutso Mohwatseleng, Mzwanele Mahashe, Punch Masenamela and Rethabile Soso, Robin Ngalande, Rhulani Sidumo and Lucky Nguzana.
Gebhardt recently made a return to the Brave Warriors after an absence of about two years, when they played in the 2018 Cosafa Cup.
The last time the former Tigers player previously did duty for the Brave Warriors was at the 2016 Cosafa of 2016 tournament held in Windhoek.
His joining of Baroka was motivated by the fact that the club plays in the best league in Africa, according to Gebhardt.
He said he will work hard and is determined to add value to the team, which narrowly avoided relegation and ended 14th on the premier league log with 38 points.
“I want to help the club, so that we can end in a much better position,” Gebhardt said.
Muna Katupose is among one of Gebhardt's national teammates who congratulated him on the move. Even though he is moving to greener pastures the Namibian thanked Sono, his former coach, for working with him for over the last two years.
“It was a great two years. Especially the last season, were I managed to play every single minute of all 30 matches, plus three of the playoffs.”
Gebhardt also thanked his teammates, technical staff and fans for their support over the years.
The new Baroka FC recruits are Elvis Chipezeze, Tshediso Patjie, Bheki Maliba, Thabo Moseki, Bonginkosi Makume, Siseko Manana, Armand Gnanuillet, Gebhardt, Shabani Hussein and Orebotse Mongae.
