Armenteros scores brace
The Swedish striker made the most of his chance, opening the scoring with a stellar goal in the 29th minute.
Samuel Armenteros scored twice in the first half on Saturday to propel the Portland Timbers to a sixth straight Major League Soccer victory, 3-2 over the Colorado Rapids.
A week after he came off the bench to score the game-winner against Los Angeles FC, Armenteros was rewarded with a starting spot.
Armenteros got on the end of a pass from Sebastian Blanco and flicked the ball past Rapids defender Danny Wilson before firing a left-footed shot into the net.
“It was just a spontaneous thing,” Armenteros said. “It's just what comes to your mind in the moment.”
Two minutes later, Colorado midfielder Edgar Castillo sent a cross off the outstretched leg of Timbers defender Julio Cascante and into the net for an own goal that levelled the score.
But Portland went ahead for good in the 37th when Armenteros headed in his second goal.
Diego Valeri added his fifth goal of the season for the Timbers in the 56th minute and Colorado's Yannick Boli, who had a goal disallowed on video review in the waning minutes, converted a penalty on the final play before the whistle.
Elsewhere on Saturday, LAFC played with 10 men the entire second half of a 1-1 draws at home to DC United.
LAFC took the lead shortly before the break, as a deflected pass in the box bounced to Diego Rossi, and the Uruguayan slotted the shot in.
Minutes later, however, Dejan Jakovic received a straight red card for a studs-up tackle on Paul Arriola. DC made their man advantage count in the 84th minute, when Joseph Mora's cross to the back post was headed back across by Arriola and then headed into the net by Darren Mattocks.
Frederic Brillant had a chance to win it for DC in second-half injury time, but his header bounced off the post.
