A rich legacy of 60 years
Sixty years on and still going strong, the much-anticipated annual Windhoek Oktoberfest is expected to be even bigger this year.
One of the greatest success stories of the annual Windhoek Oktoberfest, which takes place on 26 and 27 October, is how it has developed from a typical German festival to one of the country's most culturally diverse events. Chairman of the Windhoek Oktoberfest committee Norbert Wurm said he looks forward to the joyful atmosphere that has developed over the years at the Windhoek Oktoberfest. He further said the event has over the years proven to be a great family event, with a perfect mix of traditional games for all ages, accompanied by good traditional Bavarian cuisine that is always available to satisfy that craving for a bite of a bratwurst, or a salty pretzel that tends to naturally accompany one throughout the festival.
“It is a celebration of culture, which also celebrates our diversity in showcasing German roots but with our Namibian uniqueness, originality and authenticity,” he said.
With a cash sponsorship of N$150 000, Pupkewitz BMW joined forces with NBL and its founding partner, the Sportklub Windhoek (SKW), as a partner of the Windhoek Oktoberfest. This, according to Armand Barnard, the dealer principal, was inspired by the impressive growth of the event, its strong brand presence on the local entertainment scene and the respected cultural platform it has grown to become over the years.
“Pupkewitz BMW is proud to be associated with the Windhoek Oktoberfest. We will provide VIP parking to any BMW owner that will attend the Oktoberfest with 24/7 security. In addition, we will make available a chauffeur service to any BMW owner that would like to be driven home with his or her vehicle or with a Pupkewitz BMW,” he said.
This year the Windhoek Oktoberfest will also introduce for the first time since inception, a cashless system for transactions at the event. More on this is available on the Windhoek Oktoberfest website. In support of curbing rhino poaching, the Windhoek Oktoberfest has welcomed the Intelligence Support Against Poaching (ISAP) who will have a dedicated booth at the 2018 event for fundraising, in aid of keeping the ISAP operations alive.
A local cab app service, LEFA – powered by NBL - will also stand ready during the course of the 2018 Windhoek Oktoberfest to cater for those that will need transport to and from the event.
