Oniipa to host Cultural Tourism Expo
A first for the northern town
The town of Oniipa will host its first ever Cultural Tourism Expo, focusing on artistic activities, ethnic groups, clothing and tourism.
The expo will take place from 28 September to 2 October.
Information, communication and technology minister Peya Mushelenga said cultural tourism adds value to the education of a Namibian child.
Mushelenga made the remarks during the official launch of the expo at Oniipa on Wednesday.
He said numerous expos have been hosted in the town, but the tourism expo is the first of its kind there.
He said that everywhere one goes in the world, people respect cultural tourism in order to learn about places and things that existed in a particular area.
The minister said Oniipa stands a high chance of generating revenue by hosting the event.
"Cultural tourism fosters creative tourism," he said, adding that people can use the opportunity to be creative by building or making traditional items.
Education
Mushelenga stated that cultural tourism is very important because it shows what was done by previous generations for the benefit of current generations.
This could help people to understand their history and be able to relate to their culture.
Mushelenga emphasised that cultural tourism is also important for economic development.
"When we have tourists visiting various areas, they bring in money," he said.
Founder of the expo, Actophery Lucky Kwedhi, said cultural tourism is a real economic driver.
"We need to embrace our cultural heritages and tourism attractions in our communities," he said.
He said the expo will not only boost the economy of the town but also help to diversify the local economy, support small businesses, and enable them to expand as they would be generating income for themselves.
He called on Namibians from all walks of life to assist where they can to ensure that they make this event a success.
Mayor of Oniipa, Hileni Idhogela, said although the Oniipa town council did not initiate the expo, they are ready to assist and provide a conducive environment for the community.
Idhogela emphasised that the town is always ready for any kind of business activity, investment, and tourism from all over the world.
