Ondangwa’s annual cleaning campaign kicks off
Fostering community pride
The week-long campaign will draw to a close on Friday.
The Ondangwa Town Council this week launched its annual cleaning campaign, which is aimed at not only creating a clean environment, but to attract investors to the town.
Spokesperson Petrina Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said the campaign commenced on Monday and will conclude on Friday.
For more than a decade, Ondangwa has been hosting the annual campaign, and according to her, cleanliness is one of the town’s core values.
“Cleaning the town creates a healthy environment. It's also something that is pleasing to the eyes. You know, when you're walking around, when you're driving around, it's pleasing to see just a clean environment,” she said.
A clean environment improves physical health and mental well-being, while fostering a sense of pride in the community, she added.
It starts at home
Shitalangaho-Mutikisha urged residents to start cleaning in and around their homes. “Start cleaning already the outside of your yard, clean inside your yard. And if I do my part from a corner of my house, my neighbour continues, the next neighbour continues, then the whole street is clean.”
She further highlighted that investors will be more keen to invest in a clean town. “Who would want to invest in a dirty town?” Shitalangaho-Mutikisha wanted to know.
With Ondangwa’s strategic location, visitors to the northern parts of the country have to pass through the town, she said, adding that it is pivotal for it to be clean.
Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said local schools, businesses and various stakeholders have also been roped in to take part in the cleaning campaign. “It’s not only about cleaning the environment, but also to create a conducive environment. On Friday, an award ceremony will also be held where those stakeholders who played a significant role will be rewarded. We want all residents to take part and it should not only be for this week, but part of our daily routine.”
