Chobe hippos doing well
News in short
About 200 hippos that were stranded in the shallow water of the Chobe River at Rongara are doing well. According to James Thalubengwa, a field officer of the Sambala conservancy in the Zambezi Region, water is still being pumped to the site via a borehole - using a solar panel by day and a generator by night. He said the only challenge they are currently experiencing is food and water for the officials on site.
He added that they are aware of two or three other sites on the river where water is becoming too shallow for hippos.
In August 2019, more than 60 hippos were trapped in mud when the river's levels dwindled due to drought.
